Меня смущало это слово в значении "персонал на корабле и в армии, занимающийся бытом или само помещение". Но как-то руки не доходили посмотреть. Сейчас глянула в оксфордском словаре и обнаружила: "A building or room providing meals and recreational facilities for members of the armed forces:
the sergeants' mess.
