British and American words

Люди в Англии и США в основном отлично понимают друг друга, но есть некторые понятия, которые в этих странах имеют разные названия. Британское слово идет первым, в скобках указывается его (американский вариант).

chips (french fries) - картофель-фри
film (movie) - фильм
crisps (chips) - чипсы
lorry (truck) - грузовик
return ticket (round trip) - билет "туда и обратно"
petrol (gas/gasoline) - бензин
main road (highway) - шоссе, магистраль
motorway (freeway) - автострада, автомагистраль
underground (subway) - метрополитен
subway (underpass) - тоннель
pavement (sidewalk) - тротуар
car park (parking lot) - автостоянка
secondary school (high school) - средняя школа
term (semester) - семестр
university (college) - университет
autumn (fall) - осень
holiday (vacation) - день отдыха, отпуск, праздник
fortnight (two weeks) - две недели
tap (faucet) - кран (водопроводный, газовый)

who gets up at 4 a.m. each workday and drives to the Boeing plant in Long Beach, Calif., where she inserts rivets into the wing sections of C 17 cargo planes. отчет за 1-й месяц. "как я раскручивал свой блог" и за 2-й. "большеносность маленького

Estonia and Life on the Border

What I remember most from almost every journey is the people I meet along the way. People who restore my faith in humanity and sometimes even ignite something within my soul. You can read about any place and learn its history from books or the Internet. You can look at pictures of beautiful scenery throughout the world, but you can't really understand a country or its people until you've actually walked the soil. Until you meet the common folk there and see the way they live. Before the trip I knew very little about Estonia, except that it was formerly under Soviet control. While I saw some similarities with Russia, what touched me the most was the stark contrast in human relations. I met these women at a market near the Estonian/Latvian border. The smiles on their faces reflective of all of the Baltic States we visited. Open and friendly people, welcoming foreign guests into their small corner of the world.
